Organisers of this year’s Winter Warmth Appeal were pleased with the response from the public but say it was down on last year.

A public appeal of donations of warm clothing, blankets and bedding was made last week in preparation for the annual event at the weekend.

And while St Vincent de Paul Wagga regional manager Trevor Urqhuart said they were happy with the response, he believes it was not as fruitful as last year.

“The response was good but we think it was fractionally down from last year,” he said.

“We can’t fathom why …maybe it is tougher than we are realising.”

The appeal received less phone calls than last year for pick-ups but Mr Urquhart said they received more mattresses.

“It’s still good that the people have dug in and supported it,” he said.

Donations of winter clothing for children and adults and blankets are still being taken at any St Vincent de Paul or Salvation Army store in Wagga.
