The man sought help at Auburn hospital for the serious stab wound just after 5pm.

He was soon transferred to Westmead Hospital.

Concerned staff from Auburn called police, who arrived at about 5.15pm and started to retrace the footsteps of the man, believed to be 39.

Officers conducted a search of the area and set up a crime scene on the corner of Taylor Street and Joseph Street, Lidcombe.

Detectives were examining the scene on Saturday night.

Police believe a man and a woman who talked to a transit officer in Lidcombe at about 4.30pm on Saturday might hold the key to finding out what happened. The pair may have seen an “altercation” between a group of men on Joseph Street, near a hotel.

The injured man remained in Westmead hospital in a serious but stable condition on Saturday night.

He is yet to be interviewed by police.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
