Volcano causes more Bali flight cancellations

Early morning fog on Sunday threw flight schedules into turmoil with planes diverted to other states and the Royal Flying Doctor Service with two patients onboard to Rottnest Island.

A RFDS spokesperson said the flight, which orginated in the state’s north, was redirected to the island runway because of the peasouper shrouding Perth and Jandakot airports.

“The patients did not have life threatening conditions. It’s just part of our standard planning to default to Rottnest Island in these circumstances,” he said.

“The crew are awaiting for the all clear and then it’ll be just a 10 minute hop to Jandakot from there.”

In the event Rottnest had been fog-bound, the RFDS had another 740 possible landing locations throughout the state.

Meanwhile, delays were being experienced at Perth Airport with a number of international and domestic flights.

Visibility at the airport at the fog’s thickest was down to 40 metres.

AirAsia flight D7236 was due at 5.35am but was diverted to Kuala Lumpur and will now arrive at 11.30am. Cathay Pacific CX137, orginally scheduled for 5.50am will now arrive at 4.05pm via Adelaide, China Southern CZ319 scheduled to arrive at 6am will now land via Adelaide at 1pm. A number of international flights out of Perth have also been delayed for up to several hours. Information here, some also due to the ongoing volcanic activity disrupting flights to and from Bali.

Domestically, just one arriving flight was delayed: Virgin Australia VA 713, due at 8.30am, arriving 30 minutes later. Read here.

Departure flights are now returning to schedule. Read here.
